Research in our Department focusses on the molecular and genetic mechanisms involved in heart disease. Chronic heart failure is a progressive disorder of the heart muscle that affects all vital organs, ultimately resulting in loss in quality of life, frequent hospitalizations and a reduced life span.

We focus on the mechanisms how non-coding RNAs species control growth and proliferation of heart muscle cells (group de Windt), vascular aspects in heart disease and how cardiac cells communicate with each other (group da Costa Martins) and how genetic mutations lead to heart failure (group Calore).

Our ultimate goal is to dissect the regulatory mechanisms involved in genetic and acquired forms of heart failure and transform this information to devise the next generation of therapies for heart disease in humans.
